I have one of the first Acratech ballheads and am still using it. The only problem I had was dropping it in the ocean once and not rinsing off the salt water. Some of the screws started to rust. A little light oil and I have not had any problem since. One interesting trick I learned using that head with a lens with a tripod mount. If you loosen both the tripod lens mount and the ballhead you can get quite a range of motion which has been very helpful wint low to the ground macro shots. $269 is more the price. The fact the ball area is open makes it easy to clean in the field if you get sand or dirt on the head. Note they come in a left or right sided version.
