I'm waiting for the arrival of a 580EX, but I'm sure its learning curve will be so steep that it will be several months before I'm facile with it.
Not steep, not really. Sure, there are a number of things it can do, but when all is said and done, it's still a flash, and will respond like any other flash. Plus, if you just shoot in vanilla E-TTL, it's pretty smart, and it won't take you long to start dialing in FEC.
