Hi all,
Apologies if I'm treading old ground, but I've been off list for a good
while.
I recently bought a new 70-200L IS, but had to take it back today
because it was soft, slow to focus (especially on Al Servo) and had purple
fringing. I was told that a lot of Canon's lens problems could be due to
their not being able to keep up with demand. I was told that they've
recently opened a new factory to increase production, but as it takes up to
18 months to train staff to hand polish the L series glass elements,
standards may not be as high? The salesman said he's tested several 16-35L
lenses and found big differences in quality depending on batch.
I traded the dodgy 70-200IS for a 28-300 (my old non IS 70-200 has been
repaired, and is still better than the newer model). Fingers crossed this
lens isn't a pup too.
    Any thoughts?
James
