Really, I'm blaming it on a manufacturers defect. When I left the zoo this afternoon the lens hood wouldn't come off. It looks like the knob separated from the little metal hasp thingy. I'm going to detach the hood from the ring and I should be able to pry the hasp open then and get it off. I will hopefully be able to just return the hood and not the whole lens.
Overall, the zoo worked out well today. The lions were much closer.
