If it is brand new, take it back to where you bought it. Tell them it
was defective and you would like a new one. Take the whole lens, not
just the hood. If you bought a defective toaster you would do the same,
and since you just got this lens the other day, I would say that the
store should replace it with a non-defective unit. Let them deal with
Canon.

If they argue, ask to return it and go buy another elsewhere. That hood
alone costs several hundred dollars if I remember correctly. It's brand
new and defective parts are not your problem.

Subject: EOS Canon Nightmare: Part 1

Canon tells me that the lens hood on my brand new 600mm f/4 L is non
sercivable. I have to buy a new one from them. I'm on hold now after
asking for an escalation of technical support.
