Thanks for the story.  It is interesting........

I think you're correct in that the "hammer" probably isn't the way to go. The guy seems to be trying, in some way, to be a productive member of society.

In another post you titled this caper "EOS Life in a small town." If you have any kind of relationship, perhaps you could have an "off the record" chat with the folks involved and the local law enforcement. This might get the girlfriend to understand what the son doesn't.

Again, it is good that you got your gear back.......
