Kim, I think you'll find the 40D to be a quite capable camera, it was a big
upgrade for me from the 20Ds I was using.

As a long-time film user, your wide angle lens is probably a 20mm or longer,
and you'll want to consider how to remedy that with the 1.6x crop factor
digital body.

For a digital newbie, I'd say you should be thinking about:
- learning about the tools available for processing your images. There are a
zillion RAW workflow products, and no clear best of breed.
- trying to get a handle on cataloging and storing your images safely before
you have 6 million of them.
- understanding the limitations imposed by digital versus film (and also the
benefits), like ISO, white balance, lens performance (some lenses are
better/worse on digital than film)
- going out and taking pictures. It's easy to get wrapped up in the
technical aspects of the equipment, but it's all really about taking
pictures you like.
