Thanks for this great post! I think we can fix this. I added the above info into a bug [http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=310814] and targetted it to 1.10 (we've entered UI freeze already so can't do it for 1.8). Note that one complication is that Alt+click is stolen by metacity in the default configuration; maybe we can change that default or use a different modifier?
