Did you logoff/logon after adding the user to the epoptes group?
Can you attach the output of:
ls -ld /var/run/epoptes
ls -la /var/run/epoptes
as the user that is having the problem, without using sudo at all?

  When running epoptes from command line I get the error:

  An error occurred while connecting: 13: Permission denied.
