On the server, verify that epoptes is listening on port 789:
$ sudo netstat -nap | grep :789
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:789 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN
2447/python
If it is, then check for firewall issues.
Can you ping the server from the client?
