Hey there,

it worked! There were just some minor differences to Fedora 7 (I am using
Ubuntu 7.04). I'll write them here, maybe somebody else needs them:
    - the file to edit is the /etc/gdm.conf-custom
    - the command to start the X Server was in my case:
          command=/usr/X11R6/bin/X -ac -audit 0
    - to apply changes, restart gdm:
          ..$ sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

That was it. Now I can start xclock over the login screen :)
