No, Buildyard is not a prerequisite. You can set up the projects independently, 
install them someplace and the point the downstream's CMAKE_MODULE_PATH there. 
Ubuntu packages are build this way, for example. In the end you'll do what 
Buildyard does manually. BY now also has BUILDYARD_BUILD_OPTIONAL which you can 
set to OFF to get way fewer dependencies build.
