Problem solved. When batching multiple explorations the first screen to pop up has a tick box "Automatically print results". Removing the tick solved the problem. The first of two explorations didn't activate the printer because no column was set up to report a result - only as the second scan started did the printer jump into action. I guess I got so used to skipping through that first multiple scan window that i never looked at the boxes.
