It depends upon how many layers of paint the plane has accumulated over the years.

A good strip & repaint will probably drop a couple of pounds from the plane.

My Ercoupe had as many as 6 (!) layers of paint in places before I had it striped and repainted.  New paint should not add more than 10 lbs to a 'Coupe (my Ercoupe paint is clear coated as part of the process, so it has an extra layer).

Of course if you just put on a new coat with a brush or roller....

Hi Ed,
I really don't know how much the paint weighed.  When we stripped my plane I collected all the paint in a 5 gallon bucket with the intention of weighing it, but never did.  I'd guess that it was around 20 lbs., though.

Syd,

That’s a great answer and great info.

If I had a 415-C or CD, I’d consider stripping the paint and going shiny to save the weight.  Could it really be 28-40 lb. for the fuselage, wing roots and tail?

I know you believe you understand what you think I said, but I am not sure if  you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.  (Jim, AKA Midnight Plowboy)
