Some time back, I spent a good deal of time flying Microsoft's Combat Flight Simulator (1) online. It was a blast, and it actually helped my real-world flying. I got much better at spatial orientation and at knowing where I was after a turn and a maneuver. I got much more positive in controlling the the plane. I think that was also when I became comfortable seeing the ground where the sky normally is and vice-versa. By the way, there was NO comparison flying against the rather dumb machine and flying against a really capable and canny opponent on-line. Of course, when you died, you didn't really die. Which probably explains why in the game, people look to engage an opponent whereas in the real air wars, nobody engages unless they are pretty well assured of victory.
