Hi Dan! Here's my experience with autofuel in an Alon A2, C-90 engine. I bought the airplane 1 1/2 years ago from a fellow who always used 100LL+TCP, even though the plane has the Autofuel STC from EAA. I decided to give autofuel a try and successfully used it for a year with no apparent problems. I bought my autofuel at a local airport that had autofuel, 100LL, and Jet-A. The autofuel and 80/87 aviation fuel noticeably provides less fouling on the plugs than 100LL. I used the autofuel up until a few months ago. Then I got leery since as Dan mentioned, we have to use oxygenated auto gas in California and Jan 1, 2004 was the deadline to switch from MTBE to alcohol. I didn't know what the airport guy was going to do about this so started buying 80 octane, which is available at a few nearby airports at a $ premium over 100LL. However quite recently one of the local pilots said he heard this: The San Francisco Bay Area doesn't have to follow all the special gasoline formulation rules since their air pollution simply blows into the Central Valley and they usually measure good quality air. The dividing line for the "Bay Area" is not far away from Davis (where I am), supposedly in Fairfield. So the scuttlebutt is that if you drive to Fairfield you can get almost raw gasoline with few additives of any kind...something pretty near the original 80/87 octane aviation fuel. I still don't want to go hauling cans of gas in my trunk, but I'm going to ask the airport mogas supplier about all this. I may go back to using his autofuel if he has a good story.
