Jim,
Well, I
heard a high quality rumor that the gross weight allowed would be higher than
1232. The rumor monger (a former
FAA official in that office, now retired) said it would be less than a Cessna
152.
Our
equally big problem is the stall speed of Coupes which is a touch too high and
other rumors were that the FAA would NOT adjust that limit.
My
comments to the NPRM were that there was NO aircraft that fit the spirit of
Sport better than Ercoupes. I said
they should allow aircraft certificated as “characteristically incapable of
spinning” to be allowed as sport, even if they were above the stall speed limit
and gross limit.
There were
some rumors (that I could never confirm) that 1232 was chosen because someone
thought that was the gross of the earlier Ercoupes. Don’t we wish?!
Well, don’t
hold your breath. It’s still a
couple of days or a couple of weeks before the “90 days” are up for OMB. And that “deadline” is of questionable firmness.
We’ll see.

If Sport somehow allows Ercoupes (or if I can someday get my medical
back), I might someday get one again.
