Wayne,
I can't help with the panel however The Aviation Consumer recommends the new Garmin 296 ($1695) or the 196 ($900) as good 'hand held' GPS units.    Both have a synthetic HSI, turn coordinator, altimeter, & VSI display for those days when the a system fails (a decent & practical if not IFR certifiable back up).

The 296 has a full color display with better image quality than the panel mounted 430 or 530.  It also has terrain depiction and warning capabilities, and is WAAS capable.

Not bad, eh?!   Wish it was made to fit that hole in your panel, then it'd be perfect!

Id be interested to know what you decide with your panel.  Frankly I've been temped to make my 415 D IFR capable by; installing an electric T & B, and converting my King 155 from VOR to VOR / ILS.  However I'd also want a heated pitot and I don't know if there is such a thing for my '47 415 D.   (Any suggestions on this point?)

Wayne,

Dang, Wayne, if you can choose a $2,225 gadget to fit the hole, would you like to keep me as a pet?

Seriously, VFR TSO units are frozen and the certification process takes long enough they’re kind of behind the time when they hit the market.  I think some of the new “handheld” GPS units that have large screens might be nicer.  Also, as GPS technology improves, you can just pay to upgrade the part that needs to be upgraded.

That fancy Garmin unit is nice but it doesn’t even have WAAS.

Thanks Ken::

The best overall device I have found is the GNC 300 XL.  so far.  it is only 5.5 inches deep and it is TSO'ed for IFR, but I'm sort of old for the IFR necessity!

Wayne,

I have also looked for a good panel mount GPS for the Coupe.  I would like to have something like the Apollo 360 or the Argus 5000 that I could put in the center panel.  But the Apollo 360 isn't made anymore and is also a minimal moving map.  And I just don't like the looks or the Argus.  I haven't found anything that would work in either location.  The Apollo SL 60 includes a Comm and a GPS engine, but no moving map like the Garmin 250XL. I use an Apollo SL40 radio, which I like a lot, but I've decided I don't want the GPS down by the radio.  I want it up higher so I don't have my head down so much.   I use a Garmin 195 GPS for now, and it looks like an upgrade will have to be another handheld device--otherwise it won't fit in the Coupe and/or it will cost as much as it would to buy a second Coupe.  Let us know if you find something workable, even if it isn't combined with a Radio.

Gentle persons::

I am in a quandary!  I have removed my Ross panel mounted Loran which leaves me approx 2.5 inches high, by 6.25 inches wide of panel space in which to install a panel mounted GPS/COM.  The panel depth at this point with plugs and connectors, is restricted to 7 inches due to the fuel tank.  Garmin has several units that fit this aperture, the GNC 250 XL, and the GNC 300 XL IFR unit.  Both have profoundly archaic displays on the GPS portion of the box however the COM portion is all that an aircraft would want.  Is anybody familiar with another unit that might fit the space and have a better display than the panel mounted Garmin?  Right now I am using the space for a glove box!
