I too started with a non Aviation handheld GPS .
They work as good as the aviation ones, with some limitations.
I tried to load all western Airports into the user
waypoint database, but had to make decisions to left out some of the
airports.
Not to mention VOR's and Intersections, which there
are too many to fit any of the regular handheld units.
I am using the Lowrance Airmap 300 now and I would
not want to miss it in a cross country flight. The flight planning tools and the
airport library are worth the extra money spent.
