Some type of synthetic UV resistant thread is a must, as is some type of soft material lining to protect the canopy (silk or a satin type material lining).DanN3968H----- Original Message -----From: Greg BulloughSent: Tuesday, May 18, 2004 6:24 AMSubject: RE: [COUPERS-FLYIN] Re: Canopy Cover - Found some Sunbrella MaterialAt 08:57 AM 5/18/2004, Joseph Czaplicki wrote:

But do at least try the family Singer on it. You might be surprised. Although durable,
Sunbrella isn't all that thick and a good sharp needle pops right through. It's much
easier on the machine than, for example, standard grade denim. Back when I had
my boat, a friend made a full set of sail and rail covers on a good-quality home-type
machine (not the bottom-of-the line, but not industrial by any means).
My experience in home-brewing boat covers also brings another recollection to
mind...go to a canvas shop and get some UV-proof thread. The ordinary cotton
and dacron stuff sold in fabric stores deteriorates quickly when exposed to UV
light. Although the Sunbrella will last for years on end, fabric-store thread will quit
after a season or two and you'll have a 'cover kit' flapping around in the breeze!
Also...sunbrella is a bit abrasive. Anything in contact with your precious canopy
should be softer. Check out one of Bruce's covers some time. You'll see that it's
lined with acrylic felt. A two layer cover with Sunbrella to take the sun and felt to
protect the finish is not a bad idea.
