Hi Stephen,
My wife and I transported our coupe from just outside of Savannah, Georgia to just across the border from Detroit, Michigan (around a thousand miles).  It can be done but I would not do it unless the aircraft was not in flying condition.  We made it without damaging anything although the fabric wings were very tricky to hold securely without damaging them.  We did almost all of our driving on interstates so our minimum speed was over 50 mph.  We did this in April so hopefully I haven't forgotten too much.
I think we were lucky to have not damaged anything and not to have it vandalised in a hotel parking lot (I think that there is much potential for disaster).
If you want more info please let me know.
