First Solo

He climbs into his plane, his preflight check all done;

He has waited forever for this moment to come!

He yells "Clear" out the window, the engine starts making sound;

This is the first time SOLO he'll be leaving the ground.

He taxies her out to the end of the strip;

He can feel the sweat on the yoke that he grips.

He makes his pre takeoff checks and everything's fine,

So he "positions and holds" on the strips center line.

Cleared, he gives her the gas and she starts picking up speed.

He watches his panel for the numbers he needs.

At 60, he rotates; he's up in the air.

He climbs out at 70 into the sun's glare.

He turns crosswind, then downwind; then cleared, he turns base.

He has a look of concentration all over his face.

Now, on long final, he flys down the slope.

This is his first solo landing - his best one he hopes.

He's over the numbers, 20 feet in the air;

He idles the power, bleeds his speed and then flares.

He balloons, then he bounces; even hearing the stall horn sound.

But, he's done it- he took off, he soared and got it back on the ground!
