Coupers, Just a reminder to all that there is a good fly-in in Rexlaw, Texas, at the Flying M ranch (7TA7) on Oct 22-24,2004. This grass strip is about 15 miles east of Jacksonville, Texas (JSO) located in Mid-East Texas. This is a classic fly-in that draws people and planes from all over the country, and Coupes fit in real nice. There will be several coupes there, as well as lots of other types of planes. Below, I've posted a note sent by a pilot in the Arkansas Pilot's Association (Harrison, Ark, Boone County) to his co-members. His note is a good description of the fly-in. For anyone wishing to attend, drop me a line and I will email you the complete flyer with more information and a map of the event. I know there is at least one pilot planning on flying his J-3 Cub from the Kansas City area, so if anyone wants to team up for a flight, please let me know. Have any other Coupers from outside of Texas been to the fly-in? Ken Doyle Springfield, Mo ___________________________________________________________________ From: Frank W. Hampson Date: 09/23/04 13:16:49 To: Aviation Enthusiast Subject: REKLAW: Oshkosh of East Texas A couple of weeks ago you got an email from Ken Doyle with info about a flyin at Reklaw (Walker spelled backwards.... but that is another story), Texas. He said that he had gone to it last year but stayed in a motel. This year he is going to camp under the wing. AND NOW....... THE REST OF THE STORY! I lived in Shreveport for some 56 years before moving up to HRO a couple of years ago. I made 8 Reklaw flyins out of the last 10 years. One year it got rained out and one year a storm front was coming through the area and heavy rains for 2-3 days were predicted......... so most of us made a run for cover and, sure 'nuff, it was a 2 day frog strangler. But most often it is very cool at night with a heavy dew the next morning but absolutely beautiful during the days. This year the full moon is the 28th so that means that each night of camping there will be plenty of moonlight to make camping very pleasant. And the camping can be the most unusual you will ever experience. If you get there early Friday you can camp on the west side of the runway by pushing your airplane back up into the opening in the woods. Now were talking 60'-80' tall pine trees and some oaks. The runway is a 250' wide strip x 4,000' long cut through some beautiful forest.... complete with very nice walking trails. Motor homes and travel trailers park on the east side of the runway. Port-a-Potties are everywhere and there is drinking water facets. Set up camp with lawn chairs under the wings and watch the airplanes land and takeoff 150' in front of your campsite. Misc. EAA chapters do all of the cooking so fixing coffee at your camp is about as rough as it gets, unless you have to unwrap a candy bar or sack of potato chips. Now about the airplanes. You will see warbirds, biplanes, homebuilts, antiques, and several hundred factory builts. Last year we tried to get a count of how many were there and at 2pm Sat seems to be the max amount. Three of us agreed there were over 460 airplanes there. The runway west side was full (about 38-40) and a 23 acre field was full and it overflowed into the neighbors cow pasture, which I understand Dave Mason, the host and owner, has purchased. The problem with counting is that several hundred airplanes fly in for the Saturday so we tried not to count the transits. Saturday night is the big night and awards are giving for lots of reasons...... some are too strange to mention. All the meals are provided in a very large metal building/hanger. For me, camping on the runway edge is, by far, the only way to go. So I will leave HRO first light Friday morning (VFR only) the 22nd. From here it is 320 statue miles and I will refuel at GGG (Gregg Co. airport @ Longview Texas. That is 275 SM but if that is a little far for some airplanes, Texarkana is 201 SM an 8 SM east of a straight line direct to Reklaw (7TA7) from HRO. Dave Mason, the owner, is getting on up there and one day I believe that the "Oshkosh of East Texas" will be no more. It is very unique as flyins go. I have been to many and none can come close to this one. Don't take my word for it, ask Ken.......... he's been there. That is why he is going back and camping out this time. The EAA/BCPA meeting in Oct. 21st and I will be more than happy to brief any of you that want to gain some additional info before going. I'll have a large air chart with the trip laid out so you can see what's what. Or, call me if you like. Fly safe...... Frank W. Hampson (870) 365-0909 [EMAIL PROTECTED] P.S. Some things I take: Tent, Rain fly or Light tarp, pillow, sleeping bag, lawn chairs, gas stove, gas lantern, coffee pot and make'ns, 2ea. gal milk jugs for water, portable table, paper towels, portable shower c/w water bag, ice chest with soda pops and sandwich make'ns, low calorie snacks like Doritos, Cheetos, potato chips and cookies.
