Some time back I had identical symptoms. In my case the initial onset was
attributed to carb ice. The conditions were ideal for Ice. Like you,
pulling
the heat didn't have the expected results.

It didn't occur again until I was over mountainous terrain in Northern
California With my brother aboard. This time the engine definitely lost
power and stumbled. It was a hot Summer day, so carb ice certainly wasn't
the problem.

It turned out that the electric transfer pump that is installed on the
O-200
conversion had corrosion internally. The pump while still operating had
ground the metallic corrosion particles into flour like powder which got
past the gascolator and fine wire screen in the carburator. The goop then
lodged in the well in the bowl bottom where the mixture control mechanism
is.

The metallic goop like contaminant did not flush out when the drain plug
was
pulled.

Good luck.
