I would like to suggest that landing on a road is often not the best choice. All of my flight training was in the Northeast part of the country and my instructors all told me that in the event of a forced landing, to avoid roads like the plague. There are a number of reasons why this may be a good idea. The one most raised is traffic. If there's any possibility of interfering with traffic, I'd say go somewhere else. Why? Well, the folks in the car are not in any way related to your current situation, and the only thing worse than dying in plane crash is taking some innocent bystanders along with you. It has happened on way to many occasions, and besides the loss of life, gives general aviation a black eye it really doesn't need. Most of the other reasons have been mentioned and, in my mind, to readily dismissed. Wires and trees are hard to see until it's too late to avoid them. Many 2 lane roads are not as wide as the wingspan of the typical GA aircraft. Once the fan stops, the insurance company owns the airplane. Your responsibility is to prevent loss of life. Of course, if you're somewhere where there isn't a soul on the road for 10 miles and you're near one of the mythical 1 mile straight-a-ways on the interstate, by all means put down. Just don't end up on the back side of a blind corner blocking both lanes where the speed limit is 75...
