Hi Dan, We stopped there on the way back from Kitty Hawk, last December. It is a very impressive place. But you're right, SN#1 is not there. It is still in "restoration". I don't know how active that restoration process is, but I do know a number of list members recently donated funds for the purchase of a nose bowl for the plane. And I received word a few days ago that they have taken possession of it. But I don't if the plane is currently being worked on. As far as the Garber facility, my best suggestion would be to contact them and see if you can arrange a private tour. I have no idea how likely that is, but you have nothing to lose by asking. By the way, when you're at the Udvar-Hazy Center, take a real good look at Prof. Langley's plane, and ask yourself what the landing (even in water) might have been like with those two "spears", plus the rigging, hanging down beneath it. Oh, and whether the bamboo polls, running on top of the wings, for the full length of the span, might have had an effect on the air flowing over the wings. Make what the Wright Brothers did all the more impressive...IMO. Udvar-Hazy Center(new part of Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. I'm planning a trip to head to DC, and wanted to take a peek at good old S/N 1. It looks as if the smithsonian(Acording to their website) doesn't have it on display right now. It was at the Garber Facility, but they no longer allow public tours. Is there a place I can see S/N 1? It does look like they have the IL-116 on display at Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center, but no coupe..
