Hi Kevin again,

as far as mobile detailing goes, I guess the question you have to ask is
can you make it affordable enough for the aircraft owner and still make a
buck and make it worth your time. Aircraft ownership involves a lot of
maintenance costs, tiedown/hangar fees, costly insurance premiums, sales
tax, yearly luxury property tax and then fuel fees. Once all that is
paid, most guys try to save money anywhere they can, and most guys will
wash/wax/detail their own plane because it's free- something they can
actually do for themselves. Or then there are those owners who just let
the plane sit out in the environment and let it deteriorate.

As far as mobile maintenance goes, I do owner assisted annuals and charge
about 2-300 bucks for it, depending on how much of the slave labor I
actually have to do. If the owner does everything under my supervision,
then I just charge 200 minimum. But, I work for an airline and I get to
use our hangar and shops after hours as I need. Most airports (in
California) will not allow anyone to come on the field with a "mobile
truck" and do maintenance or annuals. The first reason is the liability-
everyone who does maintenance on the airport has to carry a minimum of
one million dollars insurance. The premium for that is about 1800 dollars
every quarter- nearly 8000 annually. The second reason is that they want
to steer the business to the established FBOs who have a proven record of
honesty/safety, and who lease the hangars and pay the property taxes.

In Fresno, the FBO owners will call the cops out when they see you, and
on the first offense they just run you off. Anything after that they cuff
you and impound your truck and tools. It happened here to a guy who was
doing it.

How far along are you in your schooling? I used to teach at an A & P
school. I still have my DME rating for giving O & P tests.
