Hello everyone Im looking for suggestions for a permanently installed radio for my ercoupe. Im presently using a portable icom which works fine but makes things a bit cluttered. Ive looked online a bit but am a bit bewildered by the options available. Weight and size are a factor for sure. Any ideas? Some swear by 'em and some swear at 'em but I think you can't go far wrong with a VAL720. When I had one in the airplane, carefully adjusted for the mic in use, people said 'gee, you have the nicest sounding radio in the pattern.' Then they were astonished when they found out what it was. The ICOM com-only radio is now TSO'd as well, and it's an elegant little unit, with flip-flop memories to boot. I'd consider a VOR receiver nearly useless in a VFR plane. Nice for practicing, I guess. Other than that, navigate with GPS. The way Lynn went in N99387, and which makes good sense, was with a well-reconditioned King KX170B. Not fancy, but rugged as all hell. But relative to the Icom or Val options, not even as cheap. And you can't escape the age of the radios in that case. I now have bought a *spare* KX170B so that one can be in the shop while I fly with the other. Not a bad approach, either, if I do say so myself. Personally, I *loathe* the TKM Michel products, but that's just me.
