NJ no longer charges personal property taxes on airplanes. They used to, and you can see the old stickers on some planes. When I bought N99387 I dutifully responded to the state's inquiry which was generated by the FAA registration and bill of sale and sent the proper sales tax. Two weeks later I got a call from a state tax collector. He said... 'Tell me about how you bought the plane. Was it from a dealer?' I said 'No, these are antique planes and rarely go through dealers. I bought it from an acquaintance in the Ercoupe community who did the restoration work.' He said, 'Well, then, I'm going to send your check back to you. In New Jersey, we exempt 'casual sales' of vehicles, boats, and aircraft between individuals, and especially between family and friends.' 'Gee, thanks' I said. He was actually quite curious about the Ercoupe. Greg See, the 'tax man' isn't always a bad guy!
