There are three Ercoupes listed on Ebay, they are listed as not having
been flown from 5-10 years and all are out of annual, One does not have
a 'N' number listed and has resided in a hanger and barn for the past 10
years, one is shown by the FAA as 'current' but not having flown in 5
years and the third has not flown in 8 years and is listed by the FAA as
Status 'in question' meaning someone reported a sale but no the new
owner did not registered the aircraft. There was a recent news article
about the FAA going after and assessing fines for those A/C with 'in
question' status. Could it be that some of the missing Ercoupes will
suddenly start appearing on the market? But hopefully not as parts
aircraft.
Food for thought. After the technical discussion at Daytona on
corrosion, I had a discussion with Lynn about other hidden areas not yet
mentioned by the FAA or others where you could find corrosion. When I
returned home, I opened up the ailerons and took a look inside. One
aileron had some minor skin corrosion covering about a 10" area that
cleaned up nicely. The second when opened revealed some pretty bad
corrosion on the reinforcement pieces ( lengths of angle aluminum
riveted to the upper and lower skins). I had to order six new
reinforcements from Univair today. Skins also cleaned up. Why these
corroded but not the skins, who knows??. I figure about three to four
hours to open and inspect each aileron. By the way, in both ailerons,
the corrosion was at the wing tip end of the aileron.
