Greg,
I
kind-of-sort-of agree with you and I made the suggestion reluctantly.
My wish is
that there would be a practical way that Tom could keep including the addresses
but with a “breaker” in them that required human intervention like my address
below (copied from others on this list).
The
perfect security is to convert the address into a graphic image that programs
can’t read without doing optical character recognition. That, however, would make all the
messages larger than they need to be.

messages
Tom:
Please don't remove sender's email addresses.
By hiding the personal email of the sender, it guarantees that
all replies (personal, flames, and otherwise) go to the whole list
and generates massive amounts of extra traffic.
I've been through that with other email lists, and have ended up
leaving the lists because there was just too much to wade through.
I'd much rather filter out the occasional virus header and let Norton
do its job then to have the value of useful things eclipsed by
Draconian measures which trade daily usefulness for (questionable)
measures designed to stop occasional inconveniences.

Tom,
Though its too late for this infection, may I
make this suggestion for the future?
Its been nice on these lists to click reply and
have the message pop up to reply only to the sender. This allows private
responses to go directly to the original messages sender without making 350+
people read it. Then, if its a reply of general interest, we have to
actively add the list address.
After a week of 100-300 virus laden messages a
day, I think Id like to make this suggestion and request. Would you
please see if your list software can hide the senderse-mail address or (even
better) make the address un-machine readable? The reply-to would be the
list.
Though the current method has its conveniences,
the danger (in these virus laden times) may merit a change in our procedures.
Thanks for considering this, Tom.
To those list members who still dont have an
anti-virus program,
I think that participation in groups like this
includes an ethical responsibility to protect your computer with an effective
antivirus program. By protecting yourself, you protect all of us from
attacks like were now receiving from one or more of your computers.
Though Im protected against the current (and I
hope future) viruses, Im now having to spend valuable time each day identifying
and deleting the hundreds of bogus virus-laden e-mails Im receiving.
For lists like this to work, we need for each of
you to protect your computer and the addresses in your address book and saved
e-mails.
As soon the list member who is infected cleans
up his/her computer, those of us under attack may be able to get back to full
use of ours.
Thanks.
