Wayne and other Coupers, Wayne asked me about a prior msg regarding "Sears". This started with an email to me from Lynn Nelson informing me that Sears has a policy of supporting it's reservist employees who are called up for active duty by maintaining their medical benefits and paying the difference between their Sears income and the reduce income from the Military. I sent the msg to several of my friends, including a cousin (Brian) serving in the Medical Corps in Iraq, and his dad. His dad, Pete Polk, sent me a msg that Home Depot had a similar policy. He also told me that he personally bought Brian Level III body armour and sent it to him in Iraq because the military only issued him (and other medical personnel) an old Vietnam era flak jacket. I wrote to Pete and the Coupers net that I intended to complain to someone that our troops don't ALL have Level III body armour. Given your past and current connection to the military, you will appreciate the emails. My msg to the coupers and transmitting Pete Polk's msg also follows. Ken Doyle Springfield, Mo Active Duty Navy, 1969-71 Coupers, Now I know this isn't about Coupes, but I consider flying a patriotic duty these days. Lynn's msg about Sears was also patriotic so I figure it has a connection to Ercoupes. I forwarded Lynn's msg about Sears to my cousin in Iraq, and to his Dad. His dad wrote back to me with the following information, including that Home Depot has a policy similar to Sears. In addition, he states that he had to buy his son level III body armour because the US Government does not provide it to certain Medical personnel. I'm going to complain to someone. It is crazy that we will build the Iraqis a new government but we won't protect our military personnel in the process. I can't think of a single excuse that would satisfy me. Ken Doyle Springfield, Mo Uncle Pete's msg follows: Ken: Thank you for telling us about Sears and their great policy of how they treat their employees called to active duty. Sears will be on top of our shopping list. Home Depot does the same thing. So Flo and I will be frequent shoppers at Sears and Home Depot. We used Home Depot to purchase Brians shop vac, fans, power drill and tool kit. He now calls himself Bob the Builder. Brian used his tools to put wood floors in the hospital tents to keep equipment off the dirt. And he put doors on the tents for better access plus it helped with the AC they finally received. Too bad the AC wasnt there when the temps in Iraq were in the 140s. Brian informed us last month that he (and medical staff) didnt have the latest body protection (flak jacket), nor did he have a weapon. The medical staffs were issued the old Vietnam flak jackets. These old flak jackets from the Vietnam era will stop shrapnel from mortars but dont stop rifle fire. Florence and I were appalled that our troops were sent into a combat zone without the latest and best protection available. I checked with a body protection company in Austin, Texas, and found in stock the latest body protection jacket with level III protective plates front and back that stop AK 47 rounds and machine gun fire. We bought it personally, and shipped it. Brian received the new up to date protective jacket in two weeks. At least when he goes outside of the compound on ambulance duty or troop injury escort to Kuwait, hes protected. Since this is probably the only one at the hospital, Im sure its in community use. We couldnt do anything about the weapon. Brian will continue to use his Looney Toon Gun by pointing his finger and saying: Bang, Bang. The Iraqis will die laughing. Hope that everyone has a nice Thanksgiving.
