I am taking Sport Pilot training at Amelia Reid Aviation at Reid-Hillview
Airport (KRHV) in San Jose, CA.

I am flying in an Aeronca 7DC (Conv) Champ with a C-85, but no electrical
system. The radio and intercom run off a gell cell, which is recharged with
a solar cell or swapped with one off the charger. The Champ costs $65 per
hour wet. There is also a Taylorcraft L-2 (65 HP) available, but you and
the instructor have to be real light.

Here are some e-mails whereby some instructors and schools have announced
their services to the various Sport Pilots forums.

Hello,

My name is Ty Frisby, I'm a new member here. I am a full time flight
instructor at Sunrise Aviation in Southern California.
We have heard from many of our sport pilot students that they had great
difficulty finding a flight school that would provide sport pilot training.
I have joined this group to let you all know that Sunrise Aviation in
southern California does provide sport pilot training in a Piper Cub. We
currently have around 5 sport pilot students, and 3 sport pilot CFI
students.
If the demand is great enough we will add a second Cub.
At this time we are not offering training in any tricycle gear airplanes.
History shows that it is wise to stick to a proven trainer until the new
ones have time to prove themselves.
At the completion of your program you would have a Sport Pilot license as
well as a tailwheel endorsement, a Class D endorsement, and a Class C
endorsement.
You can visit our website at www.sunriseaviation.com or email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] for more information.

Thanks,
Ty

As a flight instructor I see two major reasons to get a sport pilot vs.
a private pilot. Number one is cost, the private pilot privileges are great
enough that the FAA had no choice but to increase the training requirements
as time went on. A private pilot can fly a 10,000 pound 10 seat airplane at
night over the clouds... pretty serious potential for danger. The
requirement for 3 hours night, 3 hours simulated instrument, VOR navigation
etc. increased the cost of the private in two ways. First it meant that it
was no longer realistic to complete training in the 40 minimum times. And
second the airplanes that had all of these gismos and gadgets required were
more expensive to purchase and operate then the simple trainers of the past
like cubs and champs. Because private pilot became so expensive many people
were denied the chance to fly simply because of costs. The new sport pilot
is essentially the same as private pilot was in 1939 when you didn't have to
fly at night, didn't have to fly on instruments, and didn't have to learn
radio navigation.

The second reason to get a sport pilot vs. private has to do with the
medical. This one is a little more tricky... basically you still have to
meet the requirements it's just up to you to decide weather you do or not.
There have been some great advances in medicine that the FAA doesn't seem to
keep up with, and I think that the FAA is extremely conservative resulting
in a lot of denied medicals for conditions that are completely under
control.

At sunrise we are open to anyone who wants to receive sport pilot training.
If you want to get a sport license and nothing more that's fine. If you want
to get a private add on that's fine too.
We are extremely interested in sport pilot CFI's because we strongly believe
that being an instrument pilot has nothing to do with being a good flight
instructor!!!

For those of you in Northern California...

Check out California Sport Aviation
< http://www.californiasportaviation.com/ >, formerly Ultralights of
Sacramento.
This is a small operation in Lodi that is offering Sport Pilot training in
ultralights.
The proprietor is Bill Bardin, a very experienced instructor, and he's been
running the business for over 10 years.
His prices are quite reasonable (being
located in Lodi makes this possible):
$115/hr flight instruction.
Ground school and books for Sport Pilot are available as well though I don't
know what the prices are.

Or you could pay only $4290 to get your SP ticket at our 1-week full-time
immersive sport pilot course in Virginia.
Get your training in a brand new
tricycle-gear airplane with much better performance than a 40 year old
tail-wheel Cubbie.
See details of the SP course at www.maspl.com First opening is for the week
of October 14th.
