As always, Ed, There are hidden exceptions::

The law only applies if you only fly your aircraft to and from the 12 "Displays." and nowhere else! The aircraft cannot be used for pleasure flying! If your aircraft is not at one of the "Displays" that you applied for in your tax exemption, you are fined at the highest possible rate.
In California they do inventory at airshows.
I applied for the exemption 1 year, and the next year I opted out of the program.

Californians,  Did you know:

California has an interesting exemption from taxes on aircraft, for aircraft that are either, more than 35 years old, or which have 5 or less examples in existance. You must display the aircraft for 12 days a year. See info here:
