Well, I guess I'm in the minority since I liked it for what it was. While
the film One Six Right wasn't what I had expected, I was very happy to pay
the $30 for it. As it turns out, it's as much an airport movie as a flying
movie - but that's the whole point and a actually good thing in my humble
opinion.
The film's trailer was not contained in its entirety in the film however;
the film did contain significant portions of that footage AND had additional
flying footage including some really nice low & slow J-3 Cub shots, numerous
shots of a red (Fleet?) biplane, numerous corporate jets, a newer Cessna
(they helped sponsor the film), etc - many taken at sunset. The
cinematography seemed excellent to me.
Yes, the content could have been more dramatic & exciting by containing more
flying however; overall it is extremely well done, covered a broad range of
things airport & flying related, and also contains some interesting history
& facts.
I think it made it very clear that the local GA airport is a real community,
a resource for jobs, community services (police, fire, air ambulance, and
news aircraft were all featured), and general commerce.
I'm happy that this type of film was produced at all, and am glad to be able
to support it. We (SoCal GA in particular) need more of this type of film
done, and it won't happen again if it isn't supported.
Of course I also realize that most places probably aren't losing airports
like Southern California has been and will continue to. I live in Orange
County (SoCal between San Diego and Los Angeles) where we are down to just
TWO airports to serve several million people - John Wayne & Fullerton.
Meanwhile the former El Toro Marine Air Base less than 10 miles from John
Wayne (SNA) and about 5 times the size of SNA is about to be turned into
track homes, strip malls, and parkland by developers. The situation here is
severe / critical, and not likely to improve.
I keep my Ercoupe 50 miles away at Chino Airport in the County of Ontario
where I actually have a hangar, rather than paying $140 a month for a tie
down while waiting for 10 to 20 years to pay $600+ per month for a hangar
(SNA).
Why should any of SoCal aviation's issues concern others?
Think Meigs field (also shown & talked about in the film)! The problem is
not isolated to SoCal, but perhaps most severe here due to urban sprawl and
sky high property values (pun fully intended).
This ongoing loss of airport capacity to land developers and urban sprawl is
or will eventually happen in most major metropolitan areas - the places
where the jobs and much of the money is. When the GA airports nearby the
affluent job centers are gone, where will the pilots come from to keep GA
alive???
Bottom line; The airplanes and flying that we ALL LOVE and probably would
have preferred to see more of in this film are all DEPENDENT upon the far
less glamorous airport facilities that this film spent a good portion of
it's time speaking to us about. If we can't get excited about it, how can
we expect the general public to care about our GA airports?
Anyway, that's just my two cents & thanks for your time if you made it this
far. I'll get off of the soap box now. Next ?

I agree, Nice history and a good pitch to show to your local politicians
about loosing airports. If I were to do it again, I would buy gas with
the money. The trailer on their web site contains 90% of the flying
scenes and these are not on the CD.
