My understanding is that a regular designated pilot examiner cannot test
sport pilot applicants - to do so requires the sport pilot examiner
designation.

If I'm wrong, I'm sure that someone on the list will tell us. We have a
regular DPE on our staff at our FBO, and he tells me that he can't do sport
pilot tests. He's not likely to apply, either, since he's 6'6'' tall, and
weighs 245 pounds. He won't fit in many LSA airplanes.

Jerry,
Can't a private pilot examiner also test sport applicants?

Ralph -

You're very correct about being concerned as to which of the LSA
manufacturers will be in the game for the long pull.

There has been some talk that only about 80 sport pilot certificates
have been issued. But, given that there are so few flight schools yet
in the program, and so few sport examiners, it's no wonder.

Still, no number of sport pilot certificates counts people like me, a
CFII, single, multi airplane, helicopter and glider, who is now
exercising sport pilot privileges even though we have higher
certificates in our pockets.
