Normally, you’d only reply to the individual
if the subject would not be of interest to the group and to the (especially
inexperienced) lurkers and newbies.
I make almost all forum replies to the
list only. Since the other person is a member of the list, they’ll
get it, too.
If the questioner makes a plea for help
and I want to be sure that s/he gets the answer, but it’s also of general
interest, then in that
case only will I reply to both the list and the individual.
Our e-mail system is set to make the “reply-to”
address the individual. That is to keep all the personal responses off
the list and it helps a lot.
Personal stuff of no interest to 350
people should be sent just to that person. But I find that a lot (most)
replies are of wide interest and should go to the group and not just the
individual (like this one, for example).
