I'd LOVE to find a hangar condo in SoCal within commuting distance of work. I'd be there in a heartbeat with the Ercoupe and begin building an RV.

The closest airport is John Wayne (SNA). I moved out of SNA about 3 years ago when the ties downs went up to $140 per month, and also due to the effects of ocean air a few miles away (bad thing). At SNA there was a 10 to 20 year wait for hangars that started at $600 per month. Now I'm out at Chino not far from the Planes of Fame Air Museum - it's a good airplane friendly 'neighborhood'! :-).

John,

It's a city/country thing.

The people citing high hangar costs are, I think, predominantly in city
areas.

Over the years, I've paid
$35 for an open T-hangar with cement pad
$0 for tie down if I'd use the field A&P/AI for annual inspection
$65 for shared big WW2 hangar
$35 for old wooden T-hangar with doors and dirt floor
$55 then $65 for old metal T-hangar with doors and electricity but dirt
floor

I bet I could still get a T-hangar around here for less than $100. Maybe
for less than $75.

These are all in rural Illinois and Iowa. Mostly, they were 10-30 miles
from the metro area. If you get really rural, it can be cheaper, yet.
