Charles, I have been where your are. In my case, I had Central Retinal Vein Occlusion in my left eye (CRVO). With this condition the blood can not drain from the eye as fast as it comes in. This results in voids in central vision. After supplying all the medical information that the FAA wanted, I received my certificate with the "student pilot privaleges only" restriction. In my case, I was told by the FAA that I could not carry passangers, but had none of the other student restrictions. Arrangements were made with my FSDO for me to have a medical check ride and I flew with one of their examiners. She determined that I was competent and I received a SODA - Statement of demonstrated ability - and a new medical certificate with the restriction removed. With the SODA, future medicals ( for this condition) will not be a problem. Hope this helps and if you would like to continue this discussion offline, I'm available. ( Lately, I delete more of this forum that I read since I do not like the way a couple of the responders are acting -- like junior high girls.) I had retinal detachment surgery in April. FAA, in Dec, wanted me to submit results of another test for my vision. This test was outdated and could not be found in Cleveland, OH area. After calling FAA/medical in Oklahoma City, I was given permission to use a different test for field graphs of my peripheral vision. Finally, I have received a limited medical certificate(Third Class) with limitations of good only through Oct, 2006. It also has the statement in the limitations section: "VALID FOR STUDENT PILOT PURPOSES ONLY" Does anyone know what this means? I thought priveleges were conveyed via my Private with Instruments rating. Am I allowed to fly more than 50 nm without instructor sign-off? Passengers? Now for some good weather here in NE Ohio.
