Hi Spook,

Yes, I understand  cell phone use is still illegal in the air....  supposedly the signal may interfere with airplane instruments....I think this is false.....they want to sell you the phone use on the back of the seat in front of you!

I think that the early phones did create a problem in the air as the signal could research many land antennas.....messing up the system....now with the latest technology, the cells are automatically switched as you fly along, with the strongest signal activating a single land antenna...as I understand. So they should no longer be a problem. I think the FAA is currently reviewing the situation.

Several years ago (1995/96)  on a United flight from DC to LA, we had a diabetic passenger go into convulsions. Several of us helped the flight attendants control the fellow. Business folks riding along with him gave the attendants his parent's phone number , so they could try to find what his condition was... BUT, the attendant said she had no authority to use the plane's commercial phone to call them. Someone then handed the attendant a cell phone, and they called on it, finding he was diabetic.

We landed at Denver and medics came on board and took him off to the hospital. By then he appeared OK, and had no idea he had experienced a seizure/convulsions. He wanted to stay on the plane and go on to LA, but the Pilot insisted he be given medical attention.

I was very surprised the Flight attendant could not use the phone in an emergency.
