Subject: Coupe in a Pond.

Last Saturday I was landing for the first time at a fly-in on a small grass strip at Cox Airport, a nice flying community near Raleigh, NC. Being a bit anxious on a close right-hand approach, I made a WRONG split-second decision, did not go around, landed long, and found virtually no braking on the grass, which was wet. When It was certain that I was going into a little pond at the end of the runway I deliberately ground-looped the nice Coupe and slid backwards into the edge of the pond. Plane floated a while, then began to settle as a nice resident named Wayne brought over his lifting equipment, attached a strong line to the prop, pulled it gently up and out, then lent me his hangar until my mechanic can go and do his magic on it. No structural damage, but the sudden stoppage of the prop into the mud may require an engine tear-down to inspect the crankshaft. Weeping, John, N3760H, '47 415C. Thank God for Wayne and several other helpful EAA Chapter 1114 folks, who treated me like a real brother.
