The big rule when crossing any range of mountains is to cross at a 45 degree angle in case you
have to turn when you hit a sink.

I have considerable experience in flying Colo, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and
Northern Calif.
Lived in Colorado Springs for 5 yrs.
My rule was and will always be fly high as possible over passes and
always be
on the alert for lenticular winds. When flying over a mountain, one must
be
on maximum alert as the winds can push you into the ground very quickly.
The normal thought is to add power and climb. Normally can't be done
as fast as the wind will push you into the ground. If you see you are
descending, TURN AROUND.
The photos are indescribeably beautiful.
