The national convention location is normally decided by a person (or
preferably a group) who offer to host the convention. They bring (or send)
a presentation to the national convention to bid for the convention.

It's a volunteer job.

A good presentation will include things for pilots, activities for co-pilots
(tours, shopping trips, etc.), speakers if you can arrange that and an
airport that's willing.

A big plus is the availability of affordable accommodation. While the
richer Coupe owners will always use the local hotels (no matter how
expensive), there are many for whom the cost of getting there and
miscellaneous are most of the budget for the vacation. Organizing with a
college to rent a dorm and offer rooms at very low rates can be a big plus
and sometimes tips the bid.

Or, a really cool location can be a big plus.

The closest we've come (that I can remember) to having a national convention
in the Northeast was Lock Haven, PA. The weather east of Indiana that year
made the turnout pretty low (35 Coupes, as I recall) but I enjoyed the trip.

When no one volunteers, the executive director begs an experienced person to
"volunteer" so we can have a convention.

Volunteers are strongly encouraged! The year we in the Iowa wing did it, WE
had a terrific time!
