Well, Amateur Radio is still Amateur Radio and you could/should build
everything you can ;-). But, for about $300 you could probably get into
some real nice used equipment, if picked up locally by someone who can be
trusted. Naturally, you would want to monkey around building your own
antenna! FWIW, many of my EBay deals with ham radio equipment were poor.
Not the most honest people selling used stuff out there and I'll not deal on
EBay for ham stuff any longer.
You can download an online test prep or practice tests for practically
nothing, and I think the test cost was about $30, but I could be wrong. Go
for it! Even if you never get into it full force, it's a great experience
and you'll learn more and more. Radio shack should have the study manuals,
but there are tons of CD's and DVD's out there now. www.arrl.org is a good
place to start. Do a Google search for ham clubs in your local area.
Boy are you about to have some fun!

What would be required, equipment (new/used and how much dollars),
licenses,
etc. for a new comer to get into the ham business these days? Sounds like
fun. I was ready to take the code test years agowhen I got opportunity to
get my pilots license. Thanks.
