Dear Gary & Ed,
It is less the overall height of a person that determines cockpit fit,
rather, it is torso height. Some long-limbed tall men are not much taller
than I am when sitting down (and I'm only 5'3"). If most of your height is
in your legs, and you get an Ercoupe without rudder pedals, you should fit
fine. If, however, you are relatively shorter-legged, but have a long
torso, then fitting yourself + headset under the canopy would be tighter.
A couple of things that may help: the headsets that are made without a top
headband, such as an in-ear model (which I have) do not add anything at all
to your height.
Also, the Ercoupe can be flown "topless," i.e. with its windows open -- so
long as you don't mind the wind in your face.
Hope this helps! And, welcome Gary!

Gary,
Welcome!
You're exhibiting excellent judgment and your analysis is spot-on.
Fred Weick, the designer of the Ercoupe, was 6' 4" and he fit OK. You will
probably not want thick seat cushions. With well shaped but not-thick
cushions, you should fit fine. As you said, you can modify the cushions
yourself.
