No, Dan, we are all supposed to have our transponders set at "off" or
"standby."

Hi Syd,
In formation flights the lead normally has transponder on, with the
other planes in the flight setting their transponders to standby
mode. Question; is my assumption correct that the lead Coupe into OSH
fly with the transponder on...?

Good questions, Eliacim,
Yes, transponders are supposed to be "off" or "standby." With all
those airplanes approaching Oshkosh with reduced separation, the
ATC system would be saturated with transponder conflict alerts,
driving the controllers crazy.
I will provide everyone in the Ercoupe Caravan with VAC signs and
also special signs allowing us to park in the Type Club Parking
area. I've printed up 50 of each.
I've also printed 50 abbreviated NOTAMs, leaving out the warbird,
ultralight, and rotocraft information. I will hand all of these
things out to those who are flying in the Caravan.
Be sure to bring your own tie-downs.

I have been studying the 32 page (!!) Oshkosh NOTAM.
Two questions:
1. Are the transponders really supposed to be off? (standby) Why?
2. What sign is Syd's Ercoupe group displaying on arrival? VAC?
