We flew my coupe up to a rustic cabin run by the Washington Pilots Association on Stewart Island, the closest ofg th San Juan Islands to the Canadian border. My coupe and two friends in 172s. After spending a night in the cabin we packed up our stuff and took a walk on the beach. We got back and went to the cabin for lunch. As we were eating lunch a Canadian rescue helicopter circled low over the island. After a couple of passes ti landed on the field. We all went down to see what was going on. Two folks got out. One had a radio detractor. He walked slowly down the field to the line of planes. Each of us was saying - 'dear God let it not be my plane' - Of course he stopped by the grey Ercoupe. It seems that the ELT is set up so that it could be activated if a long item like a folding chair is clumsily loaded int he luggage compartment. I apologized profusely but was happy to know that the ELT worked and that if it were activated folks would look for me - even folks from anther country.
