I had a terrific opportunity last week. I was invited to tour the USS John
C. Stennis CVN-74 nuclear aircraft carrier while running drills before
returning to service. Aside from the wonder of this ship, it airport, and
the opportunity to be onboard an airplane as it made a tailhook landing and
later catapult takeoff, I was able to meet a crew of 5,000 young men and
women who are a slice of Americas finest. I was ashamed of my attitude
regarding this generation of 19 and 20 year olds. I thought that my
generation and that of my parents were the greatest. Meet these volunteers,
see how they run a warship of this complexity, understand the dedication. I
wanted to hug and thank each one. I am not sure if there is a greatest
generation... they are all pretty special.

While onboard I had breakfast in the general mess. My leisurely breakfast
(about 45 minutes) was shared with five different members of the crew...
each had about 10 minutes it seemed before they raced off to their station.
A young lady originally from South Carolina mentioned that her father flies
and Ercoupe. Her name was Robinette... This information came forth when I
told her I fly a small plane. We spoke for at least 12 minutes : ) due to
my double excitement!

This was an inspiring 24 hours about ship and it gave me a new appreciation
for this generation, our armed forces and the good ole USA.

Best,
John
