James, Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and is a very personal thing. I'd probably go with basic paint IF you plan to resell soon however; your old paint scheme looks OK to me, it's just different and won't appeal to everyone.
The point is that if you plan to sell soon, you don't want a paint scheme that may put off potential buyers. I know first hand that paint is very expensive. Frankly, I think a partner is a good idea, but that's up to you. The paint scheme on my plane is also unusual, but I really like it and am happy I did it. Oh, well - at least it should be most everything I had wanted in an Ercoupe. By the way, if you recall a remark about the planned FAA Lynching for me, at great expense, I resolved the problem in February which harks back to a FAA mistake (oh, how could that happen?) where they had me recorded in their fine computer network as having been denied a medical in 1995 (with the date of the last medical I was granted, no less). Anyway, they finally figured out that my medical has never been denied, etc. so the Certificate Action (!) was set aside. And they had already picked out a tree and had the noose knot tied... poor babies missed out on their fun. My message is to ask for opinions on paint. I realize that, having (involuntarily) retired since last summer, I will have to sell my rebuilt 'Coupe probably within a year or two (assuming it ever gets finished... supposedly due end of May). The mechanic / painter tells me that paint is VERY important to selling a plane and he hates my old scheme and thinks it would impede sale. Some told me my paint job was ugly (others liked it, or were just polite). I had grown to like it. I'd like to have my rebuilt plane to look just like the plane I hurt. I must consider, however, that I likely will have to sell it. The local FBO is high on the list of customers for the Cessna Fly Catcher {hope they bought the parachute option}, so I guess I could rent occasionally. So, I ask one and all to tell me if my old paint is ugly and if I should keep it totally simple (and hence easily customizable by the buyer). I am attaching my plane as it appeared when I got it (look sharply and you can see the winter door under the prop - yet unpainted aluminum) and a picture of the proposed plain plane motif (w/ Ercoupe "shields" on cowl sides, start of stripes). RSVP on or off list.
