Folks, flying to Alaska across Canada is not as safe as flying across the
US because of the terrain up north and weather. Add to that the sparseness
of airfields as compared to the US [South of Canada].
Yes it has been done many hundreds of times, but by experienced pilots and
well equipped A/C types.
Weather will always be a BIG factor but the scenery is beautiful up North.
The people are great up there.
I would suggest that anyone planning such a long trip that they ask that all
interested Coupers/and others provide a list of names and Phone numbers as
well as locations of Mechanics who are Ercoupe familiar along the proposed
route. Let everyone know your EXACT route and times.

There was supposed to be an agreement between Transport Canada and the FAA
that would allow Sport Pilots and the Canadian Recreational Pilots to fly
anywhere in North America. I don't know where that agreement stands at this
moment.
As it rests right now, flying across the Border north or south is a stupid
hassle no matter what type aircraft. A real bureaucratic mess.

Fred,
It's my understanding that Canada does not recognize the Sport Pilot
certificate and you would face a problem as PIC. About the only way I
can think of to fly to Alaska if you are limited to Sport Pilot flying
would be to fly with a Private Pilot as a companion. You could fly the
plane but not as PIC in Canadian airspace.
